How I became a writer

There are stories born from imagination, and there are others shaped by real life. Mine belongs to the latter.

After the kidnapping that profoundly changed my life, I moved to San Francisco. It was a time of rebuilding, a period in which I was searching for a new meaning for the future. The city welcomed me with its energy, its culture, and its extraordinary ability to bring together people from all over the world.

Come sono diventato scrittore

Ci sono storie che nascono dalla fantasia e altre che prendono forma dalla vita vissuta. La mia appartiene alla seconda categoria.

Dopo il sequestro che ha segnato profondamente la mia esistenza, mi trasferii a San Francisco. Era un periodo di ricostruzione, una fase in cui cercavo di dare un nuovo significato al futuro. La città mi accolse con la sua energia, la sua cultura e la straordinaria capacità di far incontrare persone provenienti da ogni parte del mondo.

The Jazz Clubs of San Francisco

It was in the small jazz clubs of San Francisco that my journey as a writer began, without me even realizing it. Between evenings of live music and conversations over cocktails, I met musicians, theologians, journalists, and, above all, American writers. They were people with a genuine curiosity about the stories of others, and they listened to mine with an attention that surprised me every time.

I told them about Brazil, the years I had spent far from Italy, the experiences that had changed me, the pain, the hardships, and the slow process of rebuilding my life. Every time, their reaction was the same: they told me that my story deserved to be written.

At first, I smiled. The idea of becoming a writer seemed incredibly far away.

Fu nei piccoli jazz club di San Francisco che iniziò, senza che me ne rendessi conto, il mio percorso di scrittore. Tra una serata di musica dal vivo e una conversazione davanti a un cocktail, conobbi musicisti, teologi, giornalisti e, soprattutto, scrittori americani. Erano persone animate da una profonda curiosità per le storie degli altri, e ascoltavano la mia con un’attenzione che mi sorprendeva ogni volta.

Raccontavo il Brasile, gli anni vissuti lontano dall’Italia, le esperienze che mi avevano cambiato, il dolore, le difficoltà e la lenta rinascita. Ogni volta, le loro reazioni erano le stesse: mi dicevano che quella storia meritava di essere scritta.

All’inizio sorrisi. L’idea di diventare uno scrittore mi sembrava lontanissima.

The Turning Point

Then, one evening, while walking along Columbus Avenue with a group of artists, including two writers, that suggestion returned with even greater conviction. They encouraged me to put my experiences down on paper—not to create a novel, but to leave behind an authentic testimony.

That was the moment my writing truly began.

La svolta

Poi, una sera, passeggiando lungo Columbus Avenue insieme a un gruppo di artisti, tra cui due scrittori, quel suggerimento tornò con maggiore convinzione. Mi invitarono a mettere nero su bianco la mia esperienza. Non per costruire un romanzo, ma per lasciare una testimonianza autentica.

Fu in quel momento che nacque davvero la mia scrittura.

The First Manuscript

I started studying, listening to their advice, learning the craft of storytelling, and experimenting with words. From that work came the first version of my story, originally conceived as a single book.

It was 2016, the beginning of a journey that would profoundly change the way I told my story.

Iniziai a studiare, ad ascoltare i loro consigli, a comprendere il valore della narrazione e a sperimentare con le parole. Da quel lavoro nacque una prima versione della mia storia, pensata inizialmente come un unico libro.

Era il 2016, l’inizio di un percorso che avrebbe cambiato profondamente il mio modo di raccontare.

From One Book to a Trilogy

Over the following years, I never stopped rereading, rewriting, and refining every page. I learned that writing is a process of constant evolution. It grows alongside the writer, matures with time, and is never truly finished.

In 2020, I made an important decision: to transform that original project into a trilogy. It became a long, intense, and deeply personal undertaking, finally completed in 2025.

Da un libro a una trilogia

Negli anni successivi non ho mai smesso di rileggere, riscrivere e perfezionare ogni pagina. Ho imparato che la scrittura è un processo in continua evoluzione: cresce insieme a chi scrive, si affina con il tempo e non può mai dirsi davvero conclusa.

Nel 2020 presi una decisione importante: trasformare quel progetto iniziale in una trilogia. Un lavoro lungo, intenso e profondamente personale, che si è concluso nel 2025.

Looking Back

Today, when I look back, I realize that everything began with those conversations in the jazz clubs of San Francisco, with those friends who believed in my story long before I believed it could be told.

This is my story.

This is the origin of my writing.
